Working in the UK

Business and commercial
The business and commercial arrangements allow employers in UK to recruit people from outside the EEA ( European Economic Area) .

Training and work experience
The training and work experience arrangements enable people from outside the EEA to undertake work-based training for a professional or specialist qualification, or a period of work experience.

Sportspeople and entertainers
The sportspeople and entertainers arrangements allow employers in this country to employ established sportspeople, entertainers, cultural artists and some technical/support people from outside the EEA.

Student Internships
The internship arrangements allow students from outside the EEA studying first or higher degree courses overseas to undertake an internship with an employer in this country.

General agreement on trade and services - GATS
The GATS arrangements allow employees of companies that are based outside the European Union to work in the UK on a service contract awarded to their employer by a UK-based organisation.

Sectors based scheme
The Sectors based scheme arrangements allow UK based employers to recruit people from outside the EEA to fill certain specified posts.

Workers Registration Scheme
People from EEA who wish to work for more than one month for an employer in UK need to register under Worker Registration Scheme.

Who Can Work in UK?

For European Citizen

The EEA includes these countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Citizens of the EEA, UK, Swiss, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Malta, Cyprus can live and work. People of Romania & Bulgaria able to work as low skill worker scheme. Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic need to apply under Worker Registration Scheme after finding a job.

Coming to UK

If you are outside UK and intend to come and work in UK, then you need to check your criteria and scheme where you able to apply. Then you can apply to appropriate scheme using UK diplomatic office near by.

Working Schemes

Highly Skilled Migrant Program (HSMP): Nationals from non-EEA countries may apply to switch into the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme without leaving the UK provided they are in the UK as a:

-Work permit holder; or
-Student who has successfully obtained a degree level qualification on a recognized degree course at either a UK publicly funded further or higher education institution or a bona fide UK private education institution which maintains satisfactory records of enrolment and attendance; or
-Postgraduate doctor or a postgraduate dentist or trainee general practitioner; or
-Working holidaymaker; or
-Science and Engineering Graduates Scheme participant; or
-Innovator; or
-Fresh Talent: Working in Scotland scheme participant.

Home office approved training or Work experience: Nationals from non-EEA countries may apply to switch into Home Office Approved Training or Work Experience without leaving the UK provided they have existing leave as a student.

Au pair scheme: allows a single person between 17 and 27 to come to the United Kingdom to study English and can live with an English speaking family up to 2 years and can help in home up to 5hours a day against allowance and accommodation. This is restricted to Andorra, Faroe Islands, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greenland, San Marino, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Turkey, Croatia, Monaco.

Domestic Worker: For employers as well as visitor. A domestic worker can change employer but with similar job.

Working in Scotland scheme: The Fresh Talent Initiative encourages people to consider living and working in Scotland. Non-EEA nationals who have successfully completed an HND, degree course, Masters or PhD at a Scottish university and have lived in Scotland during their studies to apply to stay in Scotland for up to two years after completing their studies to seek and take work.

International Graduates Scheme: It enables non-EEA students who have successfully completed and obtained a degree, Master’s degree, PhD, or postgraduate certificate or diploma on or after 1 May 2007 to work in the UK for up to 12 months upon completion of their studies. If they want to remain in the UK beyond this time, they can switch into an appropriate immigration category to pursue their career, provided they meet the relevant requirements.
